Everyone has a story

Zena was born and raised in the inner city of East Baltimore, Maryland. As the second oldest of five children, and the oldest girl, she had to be responsible from an early age. As a child, she was often called an “old soul” because she was very organized, assertive, and “knew what she wanted”, early in life.

She spent her early years pouring herself into her schoolwork and writing poems to escape some of the harsh realities at home. Born into a family of crime, addiction, family secrets, low income, and limited higher education, Zena was an honor roll student from elementary through high school. She has since graduated from college with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, with honors.

She is a nationally certified, licensed clinical mental health counselor and a licensed clinical addictions specialist, with intensive training in trauma, and many other certifications. Zena attributes her career goals to wanting to learn more and understand the things she experienced growing up. Zena is an activist for mental health and addiction and is often found in the community doing events, seminars, podcasts, sitting on panels, and advocating for others.

Zena works in private practice, group practice, and at an inpatient behavioral health facility. Zena often shares her experiences so people will remember to be kind, not pass judgment, and remember, everyone has a story.
